A year ago today, I went to Piazza di Spagna by myself on a beautiful cool night in Rome. I read notes I had written over the years, and reflected on my life.

“Just read all my important notes. Did not realize my right hand is very numb because of the cold. I’m at the Spanish Steps. Life comes to a full circle. It’s all great. I am alive. Have great friends. My time in Rome is ending but I’m loving and appreciating every second. Life in Miami feels far away, but I am present. No one can take this experience away from me.

Ciao”

Life does come full circle and I am both amazed and excited that my 365 Day Calendar from Italy shows this picture today. More and more I stop believing in coincidences and see meaning in it all.

For a year in college I studied art in Italy’s culinary capital, Bologna. I lived with 4 Italian girls who made endless variations of pasta and always had homemade chili oil on hand. It’s basically just olive oil and red pepper flakes- you can add whole dried peppers to the bottle if you have them (my parents grew and strung these for me last summer). Most restaurants in Bologna had some sort of spicy oil available as well and I grew to really love the stuff! It’s a sinch to make and makes almost everything better- especially cheese pizza.

Renaissance and Romanticism

Studying the Renaissance and Romanticism in Rome has been unbelievable, a casual class includes going to a museum and seeing a Michelangelo painting alongside one by Raphael. It is incredible to live in a place that has inspired so much creativity. John Keats has unexpectedly accompanied me in this journey as his vivid poetry was partly written here. He spent the last years of his life in Rome and I share his Romanticist appreciation for nature and life.
